During prep questions, if any of these come up, it is important to inform either or both the anesthesiologist and the gastroenterologist:
were not NPO for at least 2 hours
Colonoscopy- if they had solid food the day before,
EGD- if they have had solid food that day
Colon-if the stool returns are not "clear" or close to it
if the driver is an Uber or medi-cab (without a second person to be with them in the car)(will not need doctor intervention)
took blood thinning medication day of or day before (exception-ASA)
recent antibiotics
recent hospitalization
new or recent chest pain, heart complications, abnormal rhythms without cardiac notes
defibrillator (pacemakers are okay)
recent upper respiratory infection (URI) with residual symptoms
if diabetic, if blood sugar is at or below 75, or above 250**(dependent on anesthesiologist)
seizure within the last 6 months
if pregnancy test is positive
major complications with anesthesia (including nausea and/or vomiting)
marijuana after midnight the day of the procedure
any illegal drug within 6 months
kratom or hallucinogenic mushrooms within 1 week
for vitals:
SBP <100 or >160
HR <50 or >100
RR <10 or >20
O2 sat <94%
or if the patient just looks "off" with a health history that would have you questioning if they are safe to go under anesthesia for an elective procedure.
